Rosebud Garden Club meets

Members of the Rosebud Garden Club answered roll call by naming a tree that corresponds with their initial at the September meeting held at the Dillonvale Presbyterian Church.

The monthly tip was on sassafras, read by Jodi Russell.

Ann Grayzar and Mary Arnold were hostesses for the evening. Door prize winners were Lori Abraham and Linda Kovach.

Members discussed the upcoming Appalachian Shoe Box, benefiting the needy during the holiday season. Monetary donations will be collected at the October meeting, and boxes will be assembled at a Nov. 3 workshop. Committee members in charge of purchasing items are Grayzar and Nina Cleaver.

The fall regional meeting will be held at the Hopedale Social Hall on Oct. 20. Reservations are due by Oct. 12. For information on the meeting, contact Russell at (740) 537-2862 or Cleaver at (740) 769-2465.

The coffee and sign-in hour will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. A covered-dish lunch will be served, with table service provided.

Edna Walley will be using "All About Dahlias" as her subject for the 11 a.m. program. At 1 p.m. Joanne Valenti will speak on "From Out of Her Gourd."

There will be a basket drawing, an Ohio Association of Garden Clubs sales table, a photo contest, a bulb and seed exchange and flea market table.

The cost is $10.

A program on Bountiful Basils was presented by Cleaver. One of the most popular culinary herbs today, there are more than 150 species worldwide, according to Cleaver, who served basil butter and basil sandwich spread to demonstrate just a few uses of the herb. Members were given potted basil plants to grow at home.

Darwin Burge reminded members to save milk containers for the spring planting workshop. Debbie Finney gave vegetables and herbs from her garden to all attending.

The Oct. 17 meeting will be a covered-dish dinner and a seed swap. A program on dehydrating vegetables will be given by Marjorie Bensie.

Pomona Grange

The Jefferson County Pomona Grange No. 41 meeting and officers conference was held in New Alexandria with Liberty Grange No. 1749 members serving as hosts.

Activities discussed were Liberty's games party set for 7 p.m. Oct. 13.

There will be a $4 donation at the door.

Barbara Merryman was named to be the deaf chairman of the group.

The county Grange banquet is Oct. 6 in Unionport, beginning at 2 p.m.

Sis Brannon, lecturer, presented the program which featured piano music by Dixie Turner.

The mext meeting will be held at 3 p.m. Nov. 17 in Unionport.

Red Hat club

members meet

Members of the Red Hat Club met recently at the Dove Restaurant in Bloomingdale with Tillie Lowell serving as hostess.

Marge Juresko and Vera Evans were prize winners.

Ruth Sterling will be the hostess for the next meeting.
