WELLSBURG - Rebecca Conaway, a sixth-grader at Wellsburg Middle School, was selected to attend the Junior National Young Leaders Conference held in Washington in June.
Held by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, the conference promoted the following leadership traits: character, communication, setting goals, problem-solving skills, respect and teamwork.
While there, Conaway visited several national memorials, including the Lincoln Memorial and Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial; the National Museum of American History and the Newseum, where she learned about how the media has changed over the years.
While traveling to and from Washington, she also visited John Brown's Fort at Harper's Ferry and the Maryland Science Center.
The daughter of Eric and Tracy Conaway of Wellsburg, she was nominated to participate in the conference by Donna Shalvis, her teacher. With the help of her family, local businesses, and others, she was able to raise more than $1,200 needed for the tuition and sent a thank-you and short report on her experience to each of the donors.
Conaway has been named to the Principal's Honor Roll, has been a member of the Wellsburg Middle School Little Knights Chorus, placed second in her school PTA's Cultural Arts contest in the category of literature; and was named an alternate for Brooke County Math Field Day.
She has been a bell ringer for the Salvation Army and enjoys dancing, reading and camping.
