CADIZ - The Harrison Hills City School District's board heard reports about the transportation department and a new athletic program during Thursday's meeting.

Director of Transportation Operations Ed Kovacik reported bus drivers travel 512,298 miles during the school year on regular daily routes. The district also added 38,353 miles for field trips and extracurricular events, for a total of 550,651 miles.

The district's budget last year was $1,277,546, officials said. Kovacik noted an increase of efficiency from prior years. The average fuel cost last year per gallon of gas was $3.41, with some fluctuation.

Last year's estimated fuel cost was $235,714.

"I think we had a very good year last year. We were very efficient in what we did," he said, noting the purchase of a new radio system and the special education bus. He said the district is considering the purchase of two more buses as money becomes available this fiscal year.

Regarding the bus garage, work continues on the interior walls, and exterior excavation is ongoing for the purpose of grease traps and sewage. The road has been built to the property, and the pipes may all be installed at once, officials said.

In other matters, Harrison Junior/Senior High School Principal Brent Ripley thanked the board for approving the formation of a soccer club. There are currently 13 boys and eight girls in the club.

Fundraising efforts have yielded $2,000 for uniforms next year, and Ripley added the soccer program may continue to benefit student athletes in the future. He noted two Brazilian exchange students have joined the teams.

"It's been a great cultural activity, so I'm here to say thank you on behalf of everybody that's had a part in it," he said.
