Brooke High football boosters
holding 'Night at the Races'
WELLSBURG - The Brooke High School Football Boosters will hold a Night at the Races at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Wellsburg Fire Hall to benefit the football team.
Those interested in "sponsoring" a horse in the videotaped races should call (304) 737-2782, (304) 670-3428, 670-3432 or (304) 374-9137. The cost for that is $20, which includes admission, and the horse's name will be printed on the ticket, which entitles participants to food and drinks for the evening.
Those who just want to observe may purchase $10 tickets in advance or at the door.
There will be a 50-50 drawing and door prizes.
Club holding turkey shoots
NEW MANCHESTER - The Chester-Newell Sportsmen Club will be holding turkey shoots, beginning at 10 a.m., Sunday Oct. 14, 21 and 28 and Nov. 4 and 11 at the club located on Gas Valley Road, behind Green Valley Dairy.
The cost is $2 per shot or $5 per shot money shots. Those participating may use only factory guns and tubes.
Children and women are welcome to participate. Refreshments will be available. The event will include cash prizes, meat, novelties and 50/50 shoots.

Entries sought for Apple Bake-off
WELLSBURG - Entries of assorted apple-based dishes are sought for the Apple Bake-off to be held during the Wellsburg Applefest.
The entries should be brought in non-returnable containers to the Wellsburg Town Square on Sunday no later than 1 p.m. The categories are: things made with dough, such as pies, cookies and dumplings; cakes; and miscellaneous, such as applesauce, apple butter and apple desserts.
Loretta and Michelle Basil will serve as judges for the contest, which is being sponsored by Mullenbach Funeral Home.

Church holding 'Sing for Sight'
STEUBENVILLE - Starkdale Presbyterian Church will host its annual Gospel Sing for Sight at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church located at 4600 Sunset Boulevard.
The concert will feature music performed by The Friends Choir, Tom Graham and Carolyn Glaub, Splendid Sound, Morris Knabenshue, Higher Ground, Four Friends, Bauman Family and the Starkdale choir.
A love offering will be taken during the service to benefit Abigail's Angels/RDH12 Fund For Sight, which supports research for a cure for the rare genetic retinal disorder Leber's Congenital Amaurosis.
This disorder affects a young member of the Starkdale congregation.
Fellowship and refreshments will follow the concert.
