STEUBENVILLE - A version of the colorful Steubenville Fun Map, which was released to the public on Sept. 17, is now available online.

More than 100 civic leaders, businesses and institutions are included on the map, a 36-by-24-inch snapshot of life in our community designed by local artist Lillian Brue.

The online version is an interactive journey around the community. For each business and institution featured, a pop-up window gives more details and contact information.

"Now, anyone around the world with an Internet connection can have a look at our community and see many of our business leaders immortalized in a fun, engaging way," said Alex Marshall, publisher of the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times.

Starting Monday, the Herald-Star and WOGH-FM will conduct a weeklong contest centered around the map.

"It's going to be something based on the map itself, and the potential winner will have to be able to answer an exact question about the map," said Cindy Kotsch, special events and marketing coordinator for the newspapers.

More details on the contest will come Monday.

"Every time you look at the map, something new pops up," Kotsch added. "The contest will be something unique."

Another special project involving the map also is under way.

"In November, we will have puzzles for sale," Kotsch said. "It will make a great Christmas gift."

Plans already are in the works to do a fun map for Wintersville, Richmond and Toronto in October, and Weirton, Follansbee and Wellsburg early in 2013.

"We've been excited about the fun map project from the first day," said Ross Gallabrese, executive editor of the newspapers. "The contest and the addition of the puzzles certainly adds another dimension to what has become a very popular promotion."

Framed copies of the Steubenville Fun Map were delivered to all 100-plus community leaders and institutions represented on the map.

Additional copies are still available for $1 each at the Herald-Star offices, 401 Herald Square, while supplies last.

"The Herald-Star is expanding our online presence, and we are working to make the site more engaging," said Michael D. McElwain, the online editor of the newspapers. "The Steubenville Fun Map is yet another example that sets the Herald-Star apart from other local media websites."
