Hickory to hold Apple Festival

HICKORY - The Mount Pleasant Township Volunteer Fire Co. will hold the 29th annual Apple Festival from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the fire company grounds located at 106 Main St.

The family festival includes entertainment, music, arts and crafts, antique machinery and vehicles and skill demonstrations.

The pancake breakfast will be held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily at the fire hall's dining hall. The festival will offer a variety of apple goodies, including candied apples, caramel apples, apple dumplings, homemade apple butter, apple cider and apple pies. Other foods that will be offered at the festival include stone oven baked bread; slow-cooked bean soup; fire-roasted chicken; roast beef, hot sausage, kielbasa and roast pork sandwiches; hot dogs; hamburgers; and corn meal.

Crafters will be demonstrating a variety of crafts, include wood-burning, rug-making, wood-carving, basket-weaving, throwing pottery, quilting, spinning, broom-making and tole-painting.

Children's activities include an apple-bobbing contest, apple pie-eating contest, face-painting, balloon animals, a moon walk and fire safety house. The event also will include a petting zoo and hay rides, and the local Boy Scout Troop will be setting up an encampment.

The entertainment schedule is as follows:


10 a.m., Fort Cherry High School Band;

11 a.m., The Entertainers, small stage;

1 p.m., Ruff Creek, large stage;

2:15 p.m., Mon Valley Cloggers, small stage;

3:15 p.m., apple-bobbing and pie-eating contests, small stage; and

4 p.m., Ruff Creek, large stage.


8:30 a.m., Hickory United Presbyterian Church service, large stage;

11 a.m., The Rockin' Brits, small stage;

1 p.m., Nomad, large stage;

2:15 p.m., Accelerando Music Conservatory, small stage;

3:15 p.m., apple-bobbing and pie-eating contests, small stage; and

4 p.m., Nomad, large stage.

Free admission and parking. Free shuttle service available. There is limited on-site handicapped parking. No pets or soliciting allowed.

The Apple Festival is the fire department's largest fundraiser of the year. The fire department serves 3,422 residents.
