Colliers PTA holds


The Colliers Primary School Parent-Teacher Association held its first meeting of the school year with President Tawnya Dennis presiding.

The fourth-graders led the Pledge of Allegiance, and new officers, the principal and staff were introduced. Dolly Kidd, Brooke County reading coach, and Tom Davidson, Brooke County Schools nutrition director, were the guest speakers.

Committee reports were given, and it was announced that the Cultural Arts theme will be "Magic of the Moment." LaDonna Warrick reported banking will be held every Wednesday. Monica Hosler is heading the membership drive, and Melissa Garrett announced the library will open. Members are needed for the Clothes Closet and Teacher Appreciation committees.

Principal Jo Ellen Goodall announced the school ranked 24th out of 399 schools in the state on the West Virginia Educational Standards Test, and the third-graders ranked the highest in Brooke County.

The school has been selected to participate in Project Student Center Arts Learning Environment, which has the theme "Little Red Riding Hood."

First- through fourth-grade students will attend a children's symphony Nov. 16 in Morgantown.

Polly Yarter's class won room count.

The next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9.

Trappers have


The Northern Panhandle Trappers Association met recently and announced John McNicholas would represent the club at state functions.

President Jack Cain led the meeting, and members were reminded meetings will be held on the first Tuesday of each month.

Auxiliary plans party

The Colliers Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary met at President Phyllis Aria's home, and the group decided to hold its annual Halloween party from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 20 at the fire hall. Treats will be given to children, and a costume contest will be held, with prizes awarded.

The group will meet Oct. 11.

Hunter's class scheduled

A hunter's education class will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 16-18 at Brooke High School.

No reservations are needed.

Colliers VFD elects officers

The Colliers Volunteer Fire Department elected officers, including President Theo Keenan, Vice President Jack Cain, Secretary Samantha Vilga, Treasurer Doran Daugherty, Fire Chief Theo Keenan and Assistant Fire Chief Richard Bailey.

They will take office in January. Trustees Tim Cain, Lloyd Latshaw and Kevin Neverly were renewed, and other trustees will be announced later.

Craft show planned

Colliers Primary School Principal Jo Ellen Goodall announced the annual open house and craft show will be held Nov. 5 in the school's multipurpose room.

The craft show will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and the open house will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Alumni elect


The Colliers Alumni and Friends elected officers, including President Darlene Brennan, Vice President Dean Heinen, Secretary Jo Ellen Goodall and Treasurer Lori Robey.

Heinen also will serve on the Local School Improvement Council during the 2012-2013 academic year.

The group asks that those who have photographs of the older Colliers schools, they send a copy to the school for a possible fundraising calendar. Members discussed fundraisers. Dues for the 2012-2013 year are $12 per person.

Brennan noted the group has a Facebook page, "Colliers Alumni and Friends Association."

The next meeting will be held Thursday.

Church plans

car show

The Colliers Nazarene Church will sponsor a fall car show from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the church grounds.

The fee is $5, and 75 dash plaques and 21 trophies will be awarded. Disc Jockey Tommy D will provide entertainment.
