Leaders hope to shape growth

WEIRTON - Local government leaders hoping to help shape the course of future development initiatives in the Northern Panhandle can take part in a community and economic development resource roundtable slated on Oct. 17 at Millsop Community Center.

The program begins at 6 p.m. and will include brief presentations on USDA Rural Development, West Virginia Community Development programs, West Virginia Appalachian Regional commission programs and Main Street West Virginia/On-Trac Programs.

"It's about what we can do throughout the Northern Panhandle," said Norm Schwertfeger, Brooke County Extension agent. "It's really an opportune time for it. We've got a lot of development going on in the Northern Panhandle. We're trying to do it at a time when we can still have a good impact on community development and economic development in our region, so we're in control of our own growth as opposed to just letting it stall."

Sponsors include the Brooke County Economic Development Authority, West Virginia Development Office, Business Development Corp. of the Northern Panhandle, Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce and the Brooke County Planning Commission.

"We're in control of developing our communities the way we envision them," Schwertfeger said. "It's really important to get local government officials, whom we elect, to represent our interests."

Information will be available from the West Virginia Northen Brownfield Assistance Center, West Virginia Small Business Development Center, First Microloan of West Virginia, WorkForce West Virginia, West Virginia Development Office Main Street West Virginia/On-Tracl WVDO's community development division, West Virginia Community Development HUB and USDA Rural Development.

Schwertfeger said there's no cost to attend, but anyone interested should call the Brooke County Extension Office at (304) 737-3666 to reserve a spot.
