Effort could help spur business

October 11, 2012
Weirton Daily Times

An effort which crossed various lines of business operations and government could be just what some local businesses need to grow, and we are grateful such a project has been accomplished.

Thanks to this public-private partnership, $40,000 was raised to save a rail spur in Wellsburg which serves Graphic Packaging and Eagle Manufacturing.

Without the repairs, the spur risked being classified as inoperable by Norfolk Southern Railroad, which would mean no use of that particular section. That would have meant a reduction of business and profit for these two businesses and, eventually, the loss of jobs for local residents.

We applaud the efforts of Eagle Manufacturing and Graphic Packaging, as well as everyone at the Business Development Corporation of the Northern Panhandle, West Virginia Public Port Authority and the City of Wellsburg, who worked to make sure this project could move forward.

It is this spirit of cooperation, breaking down old barriers to work toward a common goal, which will lead the Ohio Valley toward a better and more productive future.

In a time when the majority of what we hear is about partisan politics and people looking out only for themselves, this successful project is an example of just what can be accomplished by working together.

It shows a willingness to look out for each other for the betterment of our community, our region and our state and we hope more people take notice.
