Benefit event for

Gary Pielech

Former classmates of Gary Pielech of Tiltonsville, who is battling pancreatic cancer, are uniting to organize a benefit fundraiser Nov. 3 at the Indian Club located at 513 Rose Ave., Tiltonsville.

The benefit will run from noon to 11:30 p.m. and include a spaghetti dinner from noon to 6 p.m. for $10 a person. Patrons can dine in or get takeout orders.

There also will be a 50-50 drawing, drawings for baskets and door prizes.

Music by the band JFK will begin at 8 p.m.

Pielech was an avid health buff who enjoyed running and working out. After a shoulder injury in 2010 led him to seek medical attention, subsequent tests revealed an abnormality and the ultimate diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. For the last two years he has traveled to the University of Texas every three months to seek treatment. He also recently was accepted into an experimental drug study program at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Pielech has more than four decades working in Ohio Valley steel mills, retiring last year from RG Steel, but like many other retirees had his health coverage cut, leaving him and his wife, Kim, to cover medical expenses whereas previously a large portion was taken care of.

"We are rallying to help him in his time of need," said Delores Smith of Wintersville, one of Pielech's former classmates from Yorkville High School's Class of 1967 who is helping to organize the fundraiser.

All proceeds help directly cover previous and future medical expenses.

For information on the benefit or for tickets, contact Smith at (740) 264-7043.
