The Weirton Area Port Authority is a member of the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce and political sub-division of the State of West Virginia, with a port district covering the Northern Panhandle.
WAPA's efforts in creating the next generation port facilities are focused on the development of resilient communications and transportation systems that improve security, safety and promote economic development and sustainable job creation for the general welfare of the port district community. WAPA will use best practices to integrate the goals, plans and procedures of key state initiatives, including the 2010 West Virginia Multi-Modal Transportation Plan and the 2012 West Virginia Public Port Authority Statewide Strategic Plan.
Some key port activities are to:
Promote projects that meet urban, industrial, economic, recreational, educational, technology and transportation needs.
Stimulate growth, job creation, increase productivity, infuse new technologies, protect the environment, to ensure regional excellence for future generations.
Support projects in security, including participating in the Area Maritime Security Council, resiliency, technology, communications and improved infrastructure, including road, rail, marine, air, that secure and optimize the movement of goods and improve intermodal waterway system.
Provide a forum for all to participate in improving the region where they live and work.
Collaborate with local municipalities, commissions, economic development groups and chambers of commerce to achieve these goals for public benefit.
