NEW CUMBERLAND - The Hancock County courthouse was virtually shut down Thursday because of a temporary loss of water service.
Courthouse offices and almost half the city of New Cumberland lost water service at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday. All non-essential courthouse personnel were sent home. Service was restored to the courthouse at about 3:30 p.m.
New Cumberland Mayor Richard Blackwell said the city water and sewer department had to shut down service while it was replacing a broken valve near the post office.
Crews were testing valves several months ago and learned that some would have to be replaced, Blackwell said.
The city has issued a boil alert for residents for the next 24 to 48 hours, he said.
