It's the nation's fate

October 21, 2012
Weirton Daily Times

To the Editor,

A couple of recent letters prompted this response.

One writer had problems with government assistance saying that not enough was done to ensure people were truly disabled or needy. Does he actually know what someone does to get SSI or other assistance? Has he ever tried? He judges people based on their names and disparages those who may or may not be married for having children. Then bets that 50 percent receive government money. Does he have any proof? Or is he just mouthing the same un-Christlike attitudes so common now where some are pro-life until birth.

He exhorts people to vote for Romney. Which Romney? The one who was pro-choice, then pro-life and but now says, "There's no legislation with regards to abortion that I'm familiar with that would become part of my agenda?" Or the Romney who said that we all pay when uninsured people seek treatment at an emergency room, then claimed that the government provides for uninsured people because they can go to an emergency room and get the care they need. Maybe the Romney who claimed, "I've been a hunter pretty much all my life." Whoops! "Any description of my being a hunter is an overstatement of capability." The Romney who lied (sorry, 'misspoke,' the new Republican word for lying) at least 27 times in the first Presidential debate? Or the guy who thinks corporations are people and airplanes need windows that roll down? The guy who thinks middle class Americans earn $250,000 a year? The one who wants to cut jobs for firemen, policemen and teachers? Or the Romney who said, "I believe in an America where millions of Americans believe in an America that's the America millions of Americans believe in. That's the America I love."

Talk is not cheap much less comprehensible when you can't remember what you believe in. Or perhaps you believe in whatever you think will get you elected. Or perhaps you don't care because you don't have to, your money can buy you everything but a heart and a soul.

Another writer claims not to understand Obamacare. Let me explain what nasty things have happened so far. Insurance companies must cover those who have preexisting medical conditions of any kind and there is no cap for medical costs. This alone is helping thousands of people with catastrophic illnesses or injuries who could not get insurance or whose care exceeded their cap and who faced bankruptcy and even death. Children to age 26 are covered under family insurance, something vital given the lack of benefits offered to job-seekers now. Women are not penalized just for being born female - their annual exams are covered. Any problems yet?

Middle Class America's fate rides on this election. Not Iran, not marriage, not abortion or any of the flash points distracting us from the fact that We The People are losing and Corporate America is winning. Willing to be a serf - vote Romney. Wanting to excel - vote Obama.
