Chili cookoff in
Toronto today
TORONTO - A chili cook off to raise money for a mission trip to Senegal will be held at 5 p.m. today at the Riverview Methodist Church, 105 N. River Ave. There is a $10 entry fee and a cash prize that is 50 percent of entry fees. The $5 admission fee includes a tasting of all chili, cornbread and beverages. A bake sale also will be part of the event.
City man sentenced
in gun case
STEUBENVILLE - David McShan, 33, of Steubenville was sentenced to 16 months in prison on Friday by Jefferson County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr. after McShan pleaded guilty to improperly handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle and having a weapon as a convicted felon.
A second count of having a gun as a convicted felon and two counts of drug possession were dismissed by the prosecutor's office when McShan pleaded guilty.
An officer was inside Speedway on North Third Street on June 12 when he saw McShan, who was wearing a shoulder holster without a gun. Police reported the officer took McShan into custody on a bench warrant out of municipal court. The officer searched the vehicle McShan was in at the store and found a gun under the seat and crack cocaine and pills were found inside the vehicle, police reported.
McShan has a drug conviction in Illinois, which resulted in his prohibition from possessing a gun.
Extra hours set
for early voting
STEUBENVILLE - The Ohio Secretary of State has set the following additional hours for in-person absentee voting at the Jefferson County Board of Elections office at 117 N. Third St.:
Nov. 3 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Nov. 4 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and Nov. 5 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., when early voting will end.
Health department sets schedule
STEUBENVILLE - The Jefferson County Health Department will offer immunizations, flu shots and tuberculosis testing from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
The health department will have immunizations and flu shots from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Edison board to hold
special meeting
HAMMONDSVILLE - The Edison School District Board will meet in special session at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Edison High School to consider a resolution to proceed with an operating levy in response to a filing deadline for the February election.
Bridge closing,
road work announced
The Market Street Bridge will be closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday while crews install weight and motion sensors. The Veterans Memorial Bridge has been named the official detour during the closing, which could be delayed by rain and other circumstances.
Also in Brooke County, crews will be patching U.S. Route 22 next week.
In Hancock County, crews will be patching Patterson, Brickyard Bend and Carson roads and the Lincoln Highway and mowing along several roads.
All work is pending suitable weather. Drivers should expect some delays.
