STEUBENVILLE - Two men were taken into custody Sunday after an investigation into a car full of scrap metal, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department reported.
George E. Dye Jr., 18, of 545 N. Fifth St., Toronto, and Leslie A. Palmer III, 31, of 1310 Madison Ave., Toronto, were lodged in the county jail on a pending charge of breaking and entering.
A Saline Township police officer reported seeing the men in the area of Hammondsville trying to flag down cars. The officer said the men claimed their car broke down on a Brush Creek Township road. The sheriff's department reported the Saline Township officer drove around on various Brush Creek Township roads looking for the car, but the men kept changing their story.
The car was located on Brush Creek Township Road 299. The officer saw a large amount of scrap metal inside the vehicle and contacted the sheriff's department.
A deputy reported Dye and Palmer admitted to taking scrap metal from the Dando Brick Yard on state Route 213 and breaking into a trailer on Brush Creek Township Road 299. The owner of the trailer called the sheriff's department wanting to file charges. Items taken from the trailer and found inside the car were identified by the trailer's owner, a deputy reported.
Dye said he lost his wallet and car keys inside the trailer, and that is why they were walking, a deputy reported.
