Anyone who attended Park Dances Revisited over the summer can pat themselves on the back for more than just their dancing skills.
Through the money raised at the dances, the Wheeling Veterans Center will be able to provide a bus to transport 55 area veterans to Washington, D.C., on Veterans Day.
The bus will leave from the parking lot of Wheeling Park's White Palace at 1 a.m. Nov. 11 and return around 10 p.m. that night. The bus trip will include a stop for breakfast then proceed to the Washington Mall, where veterans will have free rein to visit the monuments and, perhaps, take in the various ceremonies to be held that day.
Jay Teacoach, a Vietnam veteran who served in 1969, is helping to coordinate the bus trip through the vet center. He said while transportation will be free, there is a $31 fee for the dinner buffet on the return trip.
"But, hey, if a veteran wants to go and doesn't have the money, maybe we'll pass the hat," Teacoach said. "We just want to make this opportunity available to veterans young and old ... and we promise the young guys that we won't tell too many war stories."
Teacoach said the bus provides a safe way for the veterans to travel to Washington and to visit the war memorials on a very special day.
"We leave at 1 a.m. so you can sit back, take a nap before we stop for breakfast. There will be thousands of people on the Washington Mall that day, and we hope it will be a special time for any of our veterans who make the trip. It might be the only time they get there," Teacoach added.
Anyone wishing to make the trip can call Pam at 304-232-0587. Teacoach said any veteran with special needs for traveling should call and he will do his best to accommodate his or her needs. There is a restroom facility on the bus as well.
