Today is Make a Difference Day, the largest organized national day of community service.
Across the country, and even in other parts of the world, millions of volunteers will unite in an effort to find a way to contribute toward their community and improve the lives of others.
While there appears to be nothing scheduled in our area today, many have been working on a variety of projects in celebration and in spirit of Make a Difference Day, with events taking place in the weeks both before and after.
The Weirton Salvation Army, for example, has been holding a food drive to help restock its pantry which is available to assist the community's less fortunate. Several area businesses have been lending a hand by both donating and collecting food.
Several groups in Follansbee also are stepping up to lend a hand, donating to the R.E.A.C.H. food pantry, contributing to the Coats for Kids campaign, a Christmas party is in the works through the efforts of the Follansbee Police Department and local businesses, paper products, clothing and other items will be collected for the Lighthouse Domestic Violence Shelter. Collections also are being accepted for Wreaths Across America, as well as acquiring sweaters and gloves for veterans at local nursing homes.
All of us can find some way to observe Make a Difference Day, whether it be today, tomorrow, next week or even next month. It doesn't have to be anything big either.
It can be anything which helps someone else, whether you join an already organized event, donate a few dollars to help out an organization, or just lend a hand to your neighbor.
We urge everyone to think about all of this today and try to find a way to help another person.
Each of us has the power to make a difference in the lives of others.
