Girls Scouts show they care

Daisy and Brownie Girl Scouts of Troops 1008 and 1009, respectively, wanted to take part in the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley Day of Caring Sept. 12, but were too young to work with the adult volunteers at social service agencies that day.

As a way of participating, however, the members developed a project to collect essential items for the Gabriel Project of West Virginia, which assists young mothers and their newborns. The girls asked for donations of baby care items from the United Methodist churches in Yorkville, Tiltonsville and Rayland, and the girls made donations as well.

Among troop members on hand to present their donations to Faith Hicks, Gabriel Project chapter coordinator, were Kaitlynn Merkel, Reyna Dalton, Ryleigh Dominquez, Tessah Zerosk, Rachel Jarman, Ruthie Dalton, Lizzie Frank and Emilee Reinacher; and third row, Addy Howard, Hicks and Brianna Merkel.

The Troop 1008 leader is Heather Merkel, and the Troop 1009 leader is Erica Barath. They meet at the Meadowbrook Church of God in Rayland. The troops are part of Girl Scouts of USA-Black Diamond Council, a United Way agency.
