Maple right choice for commissioner

Weirton Daily Times

There have been many accomplishments in our area during the two terms Dave Maple has served as a Jefferson County commissioner.

That's why voters should re-elect him to the Jan. 2 seat when they go to the polls on Nov. 6.

While Maple, a Republican from Toronto, and his challenger, Robert Steve Vukelic, a Democrat from Steubenville, bring extensive business skills to the table, Maple's experience with county government during the past eight years and his proven leadership abilities make him the better choice.

Maple has helped bring about many changes in the way business is done at the courthouse, from helping with cost-containment measures to meeting the challenges of maintaining a balanced budget.

Among the improvements the county has seen during the tenure of the 46-year-old Maple are the expansion of the 911 center, the construction of a new animal shelter, the long-awaited sewer projects in the Crestview and Pottery Addition areas, the continued expansion work at the Jefferson County Airpark and expansion at the Jefferson County Industrial Park.

There also has been an unprecedented level of cooperation between officials from the county and the city of Steubenville, a critical element if our area is to continue to grow.

Of particular importance has been the recent formation of a port authority, which has the potential to help with economic development, not just in Steubenville, but in all parts of the county.

That's an important addition, especially with the oil and gas money that is flowing into our region.

Maple is a proponent of increasing recreational opportunities throughout the county. Such improvements would help better the quality of life for area residents and would be an additional selling point when people from out of town are looking for a new place to live or are looking for a place to relocate or expand their business.

Vukelic, meanwhile, has laid out a multi-point plan that includes ensuring that oil and gas jobs go to local residents, the cleanup of blighted areas throughout the county and to ensure that county government works for all residents.

With the economy in our area showing real signs of turning around, we think Jefferson County residents would benefit best from consistent, proven leadership, skills we find in Maple, and traits that have earned him our endorsement.
