STEUBENVILLE -Veterans Day services in the city will be observed at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Louis and Sandra Berkman Amphitheater in Historic Fort Steuben Park.

Dan Wilson of the AMVETS Post 275 said retired Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Wes Hudson will speak during the ceremony to honor military veterans.

"The AMVETS will be joined by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 80 and American Legion Post 33 and Post 275," said Wilson.

"We will have the laying of wreaths at the flag pole in the park. And Austin Jones, a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, will recite the 'Flanders Field' poem," noted Wilson.

"The Thermes family singers will sing the 'Star-Spangled Banner' as well as another patriotic songs during the service. And trumpeters Linda Lancia and Rick Hicks will play taps," added Wilson.

November 11 originally was known as Armistice Day following the cessation of hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

At the time, World War I or "the Great War" was considered the war to end all wars.

The first Armistice Day was observed in 1919 and officially was recognized by the Congress in 1926.

The name was changed to Veterans Day in 1954 to honor American veterans of all wars.
