NEW RUMLEY - A human drama of the Civil War, based on a journal kept by Sgt. Jacob Osborn Coburn of the 6th Michigan Cavalry, a unit in the Michigan Cavalry Brigade of Gen. George Custer, will be the inspiration for an upcoming program at the Custer Memorial Association dinner.

The talk will be presented by Don Allison, Bryan Times News senior editor, at the 173rd birthday celebration for New Rumley's own Custer set for 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 1 at the New Rumley Methodist Church.

"Hell on Belle Isle" is the title of the program.

CUTTING THE CAKE — Rick Williams, the Custer Memorial Association’s own Gen. George A. Custer, will again be cutting a cake in celebration of the 173rd birthday of the general who was born in New Rumley. A dinner will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 1 at the New Rumley Methodist Church. Don Allison, Bryan Times News senior editor and historian of the Williams County Historical Society, will be the guest speaker.

Much of Coburn's time was spent as a captive in Richmond's Belle Isle prison camp, a prison that rivaled Andersonville in terms of neglect and starvation endured by its prisoners, according to Allison, who is historian of the Williams County Historical Society.

The observance of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War will be part of the program as well.

The memorial association's own Custer, portrayed by Rich Williams, will host the dinner and cut the birthday cake, with dinner music on the keyboard played by Herman Neimeyer. Door prizes, provided by area businesses, will be awarded along with a 50/50 cash drawing.

Following the program, an auction of Custer-related memorabilia and items from area businesses will be held.

Reservations will be accepted until Nov. 23 by calling Charles Conrad at (740) 945-6415 or Dave Rose at (740) 945-3744. The dinner cost is $15.
