WEIRTON - What started as a Vacation Bible School project at one local church is quickly expanding into a program to benefit many in the community.

Over the last few months, members of the Colliers Way Church of Christ have been collecting donations for the creation of "Blessing Bags."

The bags, which are periodically delivered to the Family Medical Care office of CHANGE, Inc. located at Weirton Medical Center, includes a variety of items new mothers may find useful both for themselves and their babies.

Youth Deacon Robert Greiner explained the idea came about during the church's Vacation Bible School program in June.

"It started as a project for the teens," he said.

Once Vacation Bible School was finished, several members of the congregation expressed an interest in continuing the project.

"We talked to the church and asked if it was something they wanted to do every month," Casey Greiner said.

Casey Greiner explained, to date, approximately 150 bags have been prepared and delivered to the medical office.

The bags include a variety of items, including bibs and diapers, lotions and wipes, as well as soaps, a nail file, lip balm and deodorant.

"The staff of CHANGE, Inc. and Women's Health truly appreciates the hard work put forth by the youth group of the Colliers Way Church of Christ," CHANGE Chief Executive Officer Judy Raveaux said. "It is a busy and special time in the life of new families and the 'Blessing Bags' are truly appreciated by all those who receive them."

The Greiners explained they hope to eventually be able to expand the program to offer the Blessing Bags to other area hospitals.
