Jones earns cross country All-American honors

JOPLIN, Mo. - Six months after earning All-American accolades in track and field, Wheeling Jesuit University senior Stewart Jones achieved another career milestone.

The Weir High graduate crossed the finish line at 30:19 Saturday at the NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships which was hosted by Missouri Southern State University.

Jones' time stands as the fastest 10K time in WJU cross country history. Jones earned 35th place overall and most importantly, All-American status.

"Stew ran an exceptional race," head coach Ricky Moore said. "He ran exactly to his race plan and everything fell into place for him. His hard work and unending faith in God have propelled him into one of the best runners in the country.

"Achieving All-American honors in cross country is one of the hardest things to accomplish as a collegiate athlete, and I am so blessed to have been a part of his journey. I am certain he will achieve even bigger things in the future."

The Top 40 student-athletes of 245 participants received All-American honors which equates to 3.5 percent of all NCAA Division II cross country athletes.
