Chapter welcomes

new members

WELLSBURG - The Wellsburg Chapter 23 Order of Eastern Star welcomed two new dual members on Nov. 13.

They were Doris McCormick, past matron, and Darell McCormick, past patron.

Karon C. Smiley, a member of a North Carolina chapter, also was a visitor.

A 50-year pin was presented to Betty Jean Flanagan by Elizabeth McCuen, worthy matron.

The officers will have a practice today, and the next meeting will be on Nov. 27.

Refreshments were served by Shirley Mushet, past matron.

Mall collecting

for Toys for Tots

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - The Fort Steuben Mall is sponsoring a toy drive for Toys for Tots on Black Friday through Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. all three days.

For every toy donated, those donating will get a chance to win a $50 Fort Steuben Mall gift certificate. The winner will be drawn at 5:30 p.m. Sunday. The winner need not be present.

The donation area at the mall will be in front of Toys R Us.

Fundraiser

breakfast Sunday

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - A fundraiser pancake breakfast in celebration of Jojo DeMayo of Steubenville will be held Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the American Legion Argonne Post 33 located at 808 N. Fifth St.

The cost is $5 per person with children 3 and under eating for free.

Community Carol

Sing scheduled

WELLSBURG - The First Presbyterian Church of Wellsburg will hold its annual Community Carol Sing at 7 p.m. Dec. 16 in the church sanctuary located at 901 Charles St.

In addition to a carol sing-a-long, the handbell choir and chancel choir will give performances and refreshments will be served.

The public is invited to attend.

Companies get

veteran tax credits

The Work Opportunity Tax Credit for veterans has been expanded by the Hire Heroes Act of 2011.

Those employers hiring qualifying veterans may receive a tax credit up to $6,240 for tax-exempt organizations and $9,600 per veteran for for-profit businesses. Employers hiring veterans with service-related disabilities may be eligible for the maximum tax credit.

Other factors affecting the credit amount include the length of the veteran's employment before being hired, the number of hours the veteran works, and the veteran's wage amount during the first year of employment.

Veterans must begin work by year's end for the employer to be eligible for the credit.

Country Friends will host Art Beal and Country Tradition

COLLIERS - Country Friends will host Art Beal and the Country Tradition Saturday at Memorial Hall located at 402 Old Police Lodge Road.

The doors open at 6 p.m., and the dance begins at 7 p.m.

Country Friends holds covered-dish dinners and open mic nights each Monday and Friday. The doors open at 4 p.m., the meal begins at 5 p.m., and open mic begins at 6 p.m.

Country Friends Foundation Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Christianity, friendship and brotherly love through music. All proceeds go to charity.

Concert benefits center

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - The Children's Dyslexia Center will present the West Hills Symphonic Band Inc. in concert at 3 p.m. Dec. 16 at the Masonic Temple located at 227 N. Fourth St.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Those under 4 are admitted for free.
