Bethlehem Walk marks 20 years

Weirton Daily Times

The Scio United Methodist Church at 117 Maple Ave., Scio, will again host the Bethlehem Walk the evenings of Friday, Saturday and Sunday in what is the 20th anniversary celebration of the outdoor drama that re-enacts the little town of Bethlehem on the night of Christ's birth.

Visitors to "Bethlehem" will begin their journey from the church sanctuary where they will meet their 1st Century guide. The sights, sounds and odors of ancient times will come to life as they are led from the sheep pastures surrounding the little town to the tax tent, two inns, a marketplace, King Herod's palace, a synagogue and finally the stable where the newborn Messiah can be found asleep in the manger. Roman soldiers, on foot and on horseback, a Roman chariot, merchants hawking their wares and numerous animals complete the town on this holiest of nights, a spokesperson said.

The 30-minute tours of Bethlehem begin at 7 p.m. and continue until 9 p.m. or later. However, because of the increasing number of people coming to the walk, groups should be prepared to wait in the sanctuary from half an hour to an hour. A musical program featuring scripture reading and performances by local choirs and vocalists is provided for entertainment and will set the mood for the evening.

Visitors are advised to dress in layers, according to the weather, and bring an umbrella if necessary. The Bethlehem Walk will not be canceled except under extreme weather conditions.

The walk is handicap accessible with handicap parking located at the church. A shuttle is available to transport other visitors between the parking areas and the church.

There are no admission or parking fees, although donations are welcomed to help with expenses.
