WHEELING - Wheeling police say after Bradley Patchin was kicked out of a downtown bar, he broke into his ex-girlfriend's car and waited for her before attempting to kidnapping the woman.

Ohio County Magistrate Harry Radcliffe arraigned Patchin Sunday on a charge of attempted kidnapping. The 23-year-old Weirton resident had yet to post $50,000 bond late Monday and remained in the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville.

According to police, Patchin was kicked out of the 1056 Lounge on Main Street sometime late Saturday or early Sunday. His ex-girlfriend, Erin Smith, told police she had left the bar around 2:45 a.m. Sunday and found Patchin in the back seat of her car. He then exited the vehicle and told her, "You are going with me, we need to talk," a police report states.

Smith started yelling for help, and Patchin allegedly grabbed her and covered her mouth with his hand. She was able to escape, however, and police responded to the scene a short time later.

Officers reportedly discovered a bent wire hanger in the back seat of Smith's vehicle. Smith said she did not recognize the item, but said she had used a hanger in the past to open her locked doors. Officers also observed hand prints in the dust on the rear door.

A preliminary hearing in the case has been scheduled for 11 a.m. Dec. 12 before Ohio County Magistrate Joe Roxby. A charge of attempted kidnapping carries a three- to 15-year prison sentence.
