WEIRTON - Shelby Wade, the daughter of Lonnie and Christine Wade of Colliers, recently completed and donated 20 "Birthday in a Box" packages to C.H.A.N.G.E. Inc.

Wade wrapped and decorated 20 boxes with everything a child would need to have a birthday party. The boxes were made for children aged 5 to 16 with 10 boxes for boys, and 10 boxes for girls. Each box contained a box of cake mix, icing, party plates, birthday candles, balloons and a present for the child.

The boxes were presented to C.H.A.N.G.E. Inc. to be given to children struggling with domestic violence issues who are staying in their shelter. This allows the children to feel they are not forgotten on their birthday, and it takes the burden away for a parent who may not be able to provide their child with a birthday party and a present.

"This project wouldn't have been possible without all the donations I received from local businesses," said Wade. "Every business I talked to was more than willing to help in any way they could."

Participating local businesses include K-Mart, Ted's Plaza Pharmacy, Shop 'N Save, Kroger, Suzanne's Hallmark, Dollar Tree and Wal-Mart.

October was domestic violence awareness month and C.H.A.N.G.E.'s last birthday box was given away a day before Shelby donated the 20 "Birthday in a Box" packages she put together.

"Families come to the Lighthouse at all hours, and we worry about providing the basic essentials," said Judy Raveaux, chief executive officer.

"When birthdays occur during their stay, it's a welcomed blessing to select a box for the child celebrating that special day. Shelby needs to be commended for such a worthwhile project, and we are honored to be a recipient of her Birthday In a Box Project," Raveaux said.

Wade, a Brooke High School senior, completed this project as part of her senior honors project.

The honors program consists of students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.55 who have taken honors and Advanced Placement classes, and students who complete a senior project that is approved by the honors program committee. Students who meet these requirements will graduate with honors.
