Weirton Daily Times

WEIRTON - The Weirton Salvation Army, Community Bread Basket Inc., Catholic Charities West Virginia and Reach will meet at 10 a.m. Dec. 17 at the Salvation Army facility on Cove Road to discuss how nearly $30,000 will be divided among local charities offering emergency food and shelter services.

Brooke County will receive $11,332 and Hancock County will receive $16,123 in federal funding through the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board program.

Those local organizations that are eligible must be private, volunteer nonprofits; have an accounting system; practice nondiscrimination; demonstrated the ability to deliver emergency food and shelter programs; and have a volunteer board. Qualifying organizations are encouraged to apply by Dec. 21 by contacting Tara Sheperd at the Community Bread Basket by calling (304) 748-7595.

The local board will recommend agencies to receive the funds and any additional funds available through the program. The local board has previously worked to distribute funds in Hancock County, providing more than 100 cases of energy assistance.

The grant was issued through a national board chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and includes representatives from the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, United Jewish Communities, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA and the United Way of America.

The national board will provide administrative and fiscal agents.
