Burgettstown wins operner
CANONSBURG, Pa. - Behind 22 points and nine rebounds from Ryan Glover and eight points and 15 boards from Josh Mack, the Burgettstown boys basketball team won its season opener, 67-57, over Waynesburg Friday at the EQT Energy Classic Tipoff Tournament at Canon-McMillan High School.
The Blue Devils led 17-6 after eight minutes and put the game out of reach by outscoring Waynesburg 19-11 in the third quarter for a 48-30 lead.
Logan Triebsch and Jonathan Sabo added 10 points each for Burgettstown.
Spartans fall to Blue
WHEELING - The St. Joseph Spartans JV boys dropped a 34-17 decision to St. Mike's Blue in Wheeling Parochial League play. The Spartans were paced by Robbie Valenti's eight points. St. Mike's Jack Wilkinson led all scorers with 14 points.
Dunnom arrested on murder charges
WEST LIBERTY - A West Liberty football player has been arrested on charges related to a slaying in Florida.
Deputy U.S. Marshal Chad Simpson in Wheeling says 24-year-old Vernon Dunnom was arraigned in Ohio County Magistrate Court on Friday on charges of first-degree homicide, attempted homicide and two counts of robbery.
Simpson says two people were shot, one fatally, during the robbery Nov. 17 in Miami Gardens, Fla. A warrant for Dunnom's arrest was issued out of Miami-Dade County.
Dunnom is being held at the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville pending an extradition hearing. Jail records didn't indicate whether Dunnom had an attorney.
Dunnom is a junior defensive end and running back from Pittsburg, Calif. He appeared in four games for West Liberty this season.
