BETHANY - Officials are investigating a fatal accident Sunday in an area off state Route 67 where crews were installing a natural gas pipeline.

Brooke County Sheriff Richard Ferguson said the accident occurred while crews were using heavy equipment similar to a backhoe to lift a 120-foot section of pipeline, weighing thousands of pounds, and it swayed into another piece of heavy equipment, crashing through the windshield and striking the operator inside.

Ferguson said the man was dead at the scene.

First-responders from the Bethany and Franklin volunteer fire departments and the Brooke County Ambulance Service were called at about 7 p.m. to the site, which is near Camp Run Road and the Pennsylvania border.

Ferguson said he didn't know the name of the man, who he believes was from Louisiana. He said the man's wife was living locally in a camper with him and has been notified.

He said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and other agencies are involved in the investigation.
