WEIRTON - The Weirton United Way is issuing a challenge to area retail businesses as it continues to raise money for the 2012 campaign.

The United Way currently is working on its 2012 campaign, with a goal of raising $280,000 for its 15 member agencies.

This week, the United Way received a contribution from Gus Monezis, owner of Gus's Goodies, who hoped it would encourage other local businesses to donate to the organization.

Executive Director Kristin Bowman Cross thanked Monezis for his contribution to this year's campaign, and encouraged others to follow his lead.

"He gives a boost to the retail division with his donation," she said.

The Retail Business division of the Weirton United Way's campaign includes local grocery stores, restaurants, beverage dealers, retail stores, furniture stores, jewelers, florists, pharmacies and automotive outlets, among others. It's goal for the campaign is $13,200.
