This year’s Christmas snow will come late

Winter storm to roll in Wednesday morning

The Tri-State Area will have cloudy skies and seasonable temperatures for Christmas Day today, although the forecast calls for a change later this evening.

The National Weather Service is calling for today's weather to be mostly cloudy with highs in the upper 30s and west winds around 5 miles per hour. This evening calls for a chance of snow and freezing rain after midnight with little or no snow accumulation, lows around 30 degrees and northeast winds from 10 to 15 miles per hour. The chance of precipitation 50 percent.

Things change Wednesday morning, when a mix of sleet, rain and freezing rain could make roads slippery for the morning commute, according to the Moon Township station of the National Weather Service. The forecast also calls for precipitation after noon in the form of rain, while rain will change to snow later in the evening.

Snow accumulation Wednesday is possible, and highs are expected to be in the upper 30s with east winds around 15 miles per hour and gusts up to 25 miles per hour possible. The chance of precipitation Wednesday is 90 percent, according to the National Weather Service.

Wednesday night's forecast is calling for rain in the evening turning to snow later with a chance of additional snow accumulation. Lows are forecast to be the upper 20s, while the chance of precipitation is 90 percent for Wednesday night.

Thursday the National Weather service is calling for freezing rain and sleet likely in the morning with snow showers likely during the day.

Little or no additional snow accumulation is expected with a near-steady temperature around 30, and the chance of precipitation at 70 percent. The snow is expected to taper off Thursday evening with the forecast calling for a 50 percent chance of snow showers and lows in the lower 20s.

The forecast for Friday and Friday night improves, with mostly cloudy skies with highs in the lower 30 and lows around 20.

The forecast locally for Saturday and Saturday night includes cloudy conditions with a 50 percent chance of snow showers. Highs are forecast in the mid 30s, while lows should be in the mid 20s.

Sunday's weather also should be cloudy with a 50 percent chance of snow showers and steady temperature in the mid 20s.
