Student named FFA convention finalist

CADIZ The Harrison Hills City School Board recognized Garrit Austin Sproull of the Harrison Central FFA, now a student at Ohio State University, who was named a national finalist at the 85th National FFA Convention and Expo held in October in Indianapolis.

He competed for the swine production entrepreneurship award.

Sproull earned his eligibility after winning the state-level FFA competition earlier this year. He breeds sows for quality market hogs. He took his first hog to the county fair at age 9. Since then, he has improved by utilizing better genetics, facilities and management, according to officials. Currently, almost 70 percent of his pigs place in the top five classes.

"As soon as I did it, I knew that I loved it and it was something that I wanted to do," he said, crediting his family's involvement in 4-H and agriculture with involving him in swine production.

FFA adviser Don Jones noted that Sproull competed with contestants from across the country. Sproull also earned an expense-paid nine-day trip to Costa Rica to tour agricultural sites.
