Sunny Day Congregate Respite

to host open house Friday

WEIRTON - The Sunny Day Congregate Respite will have a grand opening from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the facility located at 1052 County Road, adjacent to St. Peter's AME Church.

The facility will provide families who have a loved one suffering from Alzheimer's disease or dementia a place to leave their loved ones in a safe environment. Sunny Day Respite will provide meals, task assistance, medication prompts, cognitive drills and activities. The staff is Alzheimer's Association-trained. Clients may stay a minimum of one hour or a maximum of 12 hours.

The site will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and fees will be based on a sliding scale. Private pay is $13 per hour. Transportation is not available at this time.

NRA hosting safety course

WEIRTON - A National Rifle Association basic pistol safety course will be held Friday and Saturday at the Hancock County Sportsman's Association

The 12-hour course will include a four-hour session from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and an eight-hour session, beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.

A fully certified NRA firearms instructor will present the course, which includes lectures and live-firing. The nationally accredited course is approved by several states as a requirement prior to applying for a concealed carry permit.

Class size will be limited; pre-registration is required.

Country Friends holding dance

COLLIERS - Country Friends will host Hank Vincent and the Stone Street Station Saturday at the Memorial Hall located at 402 Old Police Lodge Road.

The doors open at 6 p.m., and the dance starts at 7 p.m.

Country Friends hosts covered-dish dinner and open mic nights each Friday and Monday. The doors open at 4 p.m., the meal begins at 5 p.m., and open mic begins at 6 p.m.

Country Friends Foundation Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Christianity, friendship and brotherly love through music. All proceeds go to charity.

Elks hosting pasta Sunday

WEIRTON - The Weirton Elks Lodge 1801 past exalted rulers will host members and guests at the monthly pasta dinner from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the lodge located on Main Street.

Dinner includes salad, pasta, bread, butter, dessert and coffee or tea. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under.

One ticket will be selected for a free dinner at the February pasta Sunday dinner.

Gardeners holding round robin

WEIRTON - The Tri-State Area Master Gardeners will hold their fourth-annual round robin from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Mary H. Weir Public Library located on Main Street.

Members will discuss annual, perennials, herbs, vegetable gardens, sun and shade gardens, lawns, butterfly and bird gardens, trees and shrubs, deer and other pests and ponds and water gardens.

The cost is $5 for those who pre-register and $7 at the door.

Concert benefits shooting victims

WEIRTON - Going Hard for Newtown, a benefit concert for the families of the Sandy Hook School shooting victims, will be held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Jan. 26 at Steel Valley Lanes.

The event will include rock, metal and hardcore acts on one stage, and acoustic acts on a second stage. Those on the first stage include HEAF, As Dreams Fade, Go Home Rocketmen, In Hope, Hands Resist and What Great Fangs. Those on the second stage include PlusManyOthers, Kali Davis, Christian Mikula and Sam Rockwell, Machete Champion.

Chelsea Lucas will be selling Sandy Hook ribbons for $1 to benefit the victims' families. The event also will include a drawing and Chinese auction.

All proceeds will go to the Sandy Hook School Support Fund, which will provide money for counseling and funeral costs.

VFW?holding dinner

WEIRTON - The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2716 will hold their monthly lotto dinner at 6 p.m. Feb. 2 at the post located on Main Street.

Tickets are $7 per person for a meal and chance at winning $500. Tickets can be purchased at the post or from post members.
