Steubenville Area Relay for Life set for June 21-22

STEUBENVILLE - One-hundred-and-fifty-seven days to go, read the sign posted on the wall Tuesday evening in Lecture Hall 2100 at Eastern Gateway Community College.

That's how many days before the 2013 Steubenville Area Relay for Life, sponsored by the Jefferson County Unit of the American Cancer Society, will get under way June 21 at the Robert Kettlewell Memorial Stadium at Indian Creek High School in Wintersville, beginning at 6 p.m. and continuing until noon on June 22.

Planners and team captains gathered Tuesday to continue laying the foundation for the community event that is five months away and hoping to raise $133,000 for research, education, advocacy and patient services.

Teams of family, friends, businesses, churches and organizations are being recruited to come on board and help raise funds for the event co-chaired by Kyle Elder and Jaclyn Walters.

Elder and Bethani Barsch, ACS staff partner, brought newcomers and relay faithful up to speed on the relay, the theme of which will be "Rock Out Cancer."

Team captains on hand Tuesday shared their reasons to relay, noting they participate in honor or in memory of a loved one's battle with cancer. Longtime ACS advocate Barb Wilinski said she and her husband, Rich, former event co-chairs, have lost 20 family members to the disease.

Wilinski encouraged participation in Lobby Day in Columbus on April 11, an opportunity to petition legislators to keep funding cancer programs and research. She also encouraged $10 memberships in ACS Cancer Action Network lobbying presence that fights for funding and expressed her hope that this year's relay will be a "CAN relay." That means there will be at least 10 teams each having 10 participants become ACS-CAN members.

Several fundraisers were announced Tuesday, including:

A pancake breakfast will be held from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Feb. 9 at Applebee's. Tickets are $5 and available at the door. It is sponsored by Team Family Affair.

Steppin' For Sisters co-chair Judy Fellows said there will be a St. Patrick's Day dance from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on March 16 at the Stratton Municipal Building. Cost is $5 for singles and $10 for couples. There will be free chips, pretzels and beer. The team also will again organize a butterfly release as part of the relay, with butterflies available for ordering for $8 through June 1.

Team Family Jewels is planning a lighted balloon release, which made its debut at the 2012 relay. A balloon is $5.

Team Cooper is planning its Longaberger Bingo for April 5 at the Stratton Municipal Building with doors opening at 5 p.m. for the 6 p.m. fundraiser. Cost is $25 for 20 games of bingo.

Barsch reported on two regional fundraisers for Northeast Ohio, including a drawing June 28 for three Visa gift cards valued at $2,500, $1,500 and $1,000. Tickets are $10 each, and teams selling them get full credit toward their individual goal to raise at least $100. "Brrrr for a Cure" will be held at Lake Milton on Feb. 23, an event where participants jump in the cold lake, with sponsors promising funds as motivation.

Discussion was held on two new elements to the relay. One is for teams to provide survivor goodie bags to cancer survivors visiting their tent sites at the relay. The other is having team tent sites selected prior to the relay so a map of onsite fundraisers can be made available.

The Teen Council's first meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Feb. 4 at First Westminster Presbyterian Church. Teens from area high schools are being recruited to participate.
