FOLLANSBEE - City Council on Monday OK'd plans by a local Boy Scout to build several benches for the city swimming pool.
Last week Jordan Harlan of Boy Scout Troop 345 proposed the project, which he hopes will enable him to earn an Eagle Scout badge.
Harlan said pending the approval of Scout officials, he plans to oversee the construction of six benches that could be used by the Follansbee Swim Team, as well as the public.
He is a junior coach and former member of the swim team, an independent group that holds meets at the pool.
Harlan said he would recruit his father, a carpenter, to operate the power equipment and others to assist.
Harlan said he plans to solicit donations for the benches, which have an estimated cost of $900, and welcomed contributions from council.
But City Attorney Michael Gaudio said council can't allocate city funds to a private group, though members may make personal contributions if they choose.

Oaths of office were administered to Dominick Miccuci, who was appointed to fill the council at large seat left vacant by Jim Andreozzi, who resigned to serve as Brooke County commissioner.
Miccuci will serve the remaining six months of Andreozzi's term, after which the winner of the seat in the city's upcoming election will fill the seat.
Council is seeking a 5th Ward resident to fill a seat representing the ward on the city's water board. Miccuci, who had held that seat, will continue to serve on the water board as councilman at large.
Council authorized Mary Kimberland of Follansbee to offer a youth basketball league at Mahan Playground from July 1 through Aug. 15. Kimberland will announce sign-up dates for the league.
