School rivalry gives back

January 17, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

WEIRTON - The Madonna High School basketball team and coaches are encouraging their school community and fans to show their support - for the Weirton-based Community Bread Basket - during their city-rivalry game against Weir High School at 6 p.m. Friday in the Weir High gymnasium.

"This is a great opportunity for our Madonna High boys basketball team to contribute to the community," said Head Coach George Vargo, who thought of the friendly extra competition last year. "It gives them a spirit of helping others, and that is an important lesson in life."

Each school's Interact Club is promoting a food collection and fundraiser for the Bread Basket, which provides food assistance and social services to low-income local residents.

"We are asking students and adults attending the game to bring in nonperishable foods to help Community Bread Basket in feeding the hungry of our community," said Jim Pauchnik, Bread Basket publicity chair, who added last year's event was a great help to the organization in feeding those in need in the Weirton area.

In addition to supporting their respective schools, those attending the game also are asked to support the Bread Basket in a friendly competition to see which school community can contribute the most nonperishable food items and monetary donations toward the charity. Anyone attending the game can bring in nonperishable goods and deposit them in the respective containers. There will also be an opportunity to make monetary contributions the night of the game.

"So put (Friday) on your calendar for this special event to help Community Bread Basket and to support our schools," said Pauchnik.

This is the second match between the two teams. Madonna won the first, 55-27, Dec. 28. This will be the last regular season game between Madonna and Weir.
