Stratton Learning Center launched

The Village of Stratton is implementing a new community service with the opening of the Stratton Learning Center located in the library at the Stratton Municipal Building.

An open house was held there Jan. 16, an opportunity for visitors to learn that the center's mission is to provide educational programs to area youth in grades kindergarten through eight, according to Kelly Householder, program coordinator and a Village of Stratton councilperson since May 2008.

The class sessions will be held on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month with the next session set for Wednesday.

Registration will be from 5:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., when the class begins. It runs until 7 p.m.

The curriculum will follow the youth education programs donated by a Modern Woodman of America representative. The programs cover the following subjects - financial literacy, exercise and nutrition, patriotic civics, safety and life skills, and ecology awareness.

"We hope to implement classes for adults in the near future and are currently surveying the areas of interest, said Householder. In addition to her, the staff includes volunteers Pat Horton, Tammy Deal, Connie Rohall and Bertha Brown.

"We are all volunteers just trying to make a difference in a child's life. Everyone tells us 'to invest in your future.' In my opinion, the children are our future, and investing in them is as important to me as contributing to a retirement account - and also a lot more fun," Householder said.

The establishment of the learning center comes on the heels of inquiries Householder fielded and presented to council, which gave its support to the effort. The center is located in the library that has had an off-and-on presence in the municipal building and is a grassroots effort, not a part of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County.

The library has been closed in recent years, but there are plans to reopen it, according to Householder.
