Hancock County Health set to hold food handler class

WEIRTON - The Hancock County Health Department will hold a food handler class at 10 a.m. March 11 at the Greater Weirton Area Senior Center located at 3425 Main St.

Anyone involved in food service, including both the food service industry and volunteers, in Hancock and Brooke counties is required to possess a current food handler card.

Food handler cards are free to volunteers working for a nonprofit organization.

For those employed in commercial food establishments, the cost is $7 for a one-year card, $12 for a two-year card and $17 for a three-year card.

Online classes can be taken through, and payment may be made by credit or Pay Pal. Participants also may print the completion verification and pay the fee from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the health department in New Cumberland.

St. Nicholas selling pierogies

WEIRTON - St. Nicholas Orthodox Church will hold a frozen cheese and potato pierogi sale from noon to 2 p.m. March 15 at the church located 604 Colliers Way, across from the Weirton Medical.

Sacred Heart holding services

WEIRTON - The Sacred Heart of Mary Church will hold special services during Lent.

Gorzkie Zale, known as "Bitter Lamentations," is a traditional Polish Lenten devotion dating back to the 1700s. It will be celebrated at 3 p.m. March 17 at the church located at 200 Preston Ave.

The service will incorporate Polish and English text, chanting, reading and silent mediation while those attending reflect on the suffering of Jesus Christ and Mary during the passion and crucifixion.

Tenebrae, known as "Darkness Fell," is a traditional monastic Holy Week devotion. It will be celebrated at 8 p.m. March 27 at the church located at 200 Preston Ave. The service will reflect on the last seven phrases Christ spoke during the passion and crucifixion.

All are welcome to attend the services.

Tack auction set for March 23

NEW CUMBERLAND - A tack auction will be held March 23 at 4-H Camp Aura on Ross Road.

The doors will open at noon, and the auction begins at 1 p.m.

The Knight Riderz and Sundowners 4-H Saddle clubs are sponsoring the event, and proceeds will benefit the horse show facility at Camp Aura.

Name brand tack, grooming supplies, barn supplies, riding gear, horse care, wormers, saddle pads and saddles will be available. Steve Armstrong of Salem, Ohio, will supply all new tack. Used tack consignments also will be taken. Gift cards, items and services donated by local sponsors also will be auctions during the sale. Col. Larry Reed of Reed's Auction Co. will serve as an auctioneer.
