WITTNESSES TO HISTORY — More than 125 students from the Franciscan University of Steubenville’s study abroad program in Austria made a 16-hour bus trip to Rome Wednesday to attend the last official public appearance by Pope Benedict XVI. The university students were among 150,000 people who filled St. Peter’s Square for the emotional farewell of the first pontiff to step down in 600 years. Benedict met this morning with his cardinals for a final time, then flew by helicopter to the papal residence at Castel Gandolfo south of Rome. Vatican officials have said cardinals will begin meeting Monday to decide when to set the date for the conclave to choose the next leader of the Catholic church.
