WEIRTON The city's Fourth of July fireworks display just got a bit bigger, thanks to a $3,000 donation from the Renaissance Weirton committee.
The committee has given the city $3,000 for its Fourth of July fireworks display, which this year will be held July 6 and will cap a full day of games and live entertainment, beginning with the annual parade at 11:30 a.m.
"We appreciate the donation," Mayor George Kondik, a committee member, said after Monday's check presentation, "and we're looking forward to another bigger, better event. I'd like to encourage everybody to take part in the activities."

Gus Monezis, chairman of the planning committee, said the annual Renaissance Weirton Summerfest event, to be staged at the Weirton Event Center, will feature an entertainment lineup ranging from "The Wild World of Animals" to bands like Spinning Jenny, Legend and other acts still to be announced. They'll also have a car show in the afternoon, "and after the fireworks, we'll have a late-night movie for kids," he said.
"Our goal is to have the biggest and best fireworks for the festival this year," he said.
In addition to the fireworks fund donation, Monezis and committee member Millicent Zak said they'll also be giving $1,000 each to 10 community groups. They've also donated $10,000 to the parks and recreation board to renovate the men's room at the Millsop Community Center.
"We're not in it to make money, we're in it to help the community," Monezis said. "Obviously, we have to make money to do it, but we give it back to (worthwhile) causes in the community."
Also on hand for the check presentation were City Manager Valerie Means, Police Chief Bruce Marshall and Zak.
The Wheeling Symphony's annual free concert will be July 5, also at the Event Center.
