Weirton Salvation Army kicking off food drive

WEIRTON - The Salvation Army is continuing its mission to serve the community by kicking off its latest food drive called "Soup is On."

According to Salvation Army Social Services Director Brenda Greathouse, there is a rising need for food and utility assistance in the Weirton community. In order to meet this need, she said, the Salvation Army is kicking off a series of food drives in the spring.

"Soup is On" is a drive to collect any kind of soup or the ingredients to make homemade soup. Greathouse said it's part of an initiative to "spring" forward to help meet specific needs. She added the Salvation Army will be announcing two other food drives, one calling for breakfast foods and another for casseroles.

Greathouse said 73 families consisting of 182 people were helped in January with food, clothes, furniture and utility bills. She said February saw 70 families consisting of 164 people with similar needs. She said helping with food drives is just one way the Salvation Army is reaching out to people experiencing hardship.

"Bills are high right now and people are struggling. There is a lot of suffering in our community," she said. "Some of the hardships are due to layoffs where people haven't worked enough to draw unemployment. People's work hours are being cut due to Obamacare and many are having to work two part-time jobs to equal the pay of having one full-time job."

Greathouse said the Salvation Army is reaching out to individuals and businesses to assist them with the food drive. She said Weirton continues to be a generous community and hopes to see that trend continue as they seek to help those in need.
