WEIRTON - Following months of work by countless volunteers and contributors, the Weirton United Way on Thursday reached its 2012 campaign goal.
Executive Director Kristin Bowman-Cross and 2012 Campaign Chair John Greco made the announcement Thursday, saying they had received the donations to hit the $280,000 mark that morning.
Earlier this week, the organization put out a plea to the community, asking for assistance in raising the final $6,000 needed for the campaign.

"We had several phone calls come in the last few days," Bowman-Cross said.
While not identifying anyone in particular, she said several individuals, groups and businesses had come forward since Monday offering donations and assistance.
The United Way officially had until the end of this month to complete its campaign; however, Bowman-Cross made it her personal goal to hit the $280,000 mark by today.
For his part, Greco said failing to make the campaign goal was not an option, noting all of the member agencies which rely on the funding to operate their programs and services.
"We knew with the community behind us, we would be successful," Greco said. "Whether they gave $5 or $500, it made a difference."
There are 15 member agencies which rely on the money raised by the Weirton United Way. Those agencies are the American Red Cross-River Valley Chapter; Boys and Girls Club of Weirton; Girl Scouts Black Diamond Council; Boy Scouts of America; CHANGE, Inc.; Community Bread Basket; Dunbar Recreation Center; Healthways; Hancock/Brooke/Ohio/Marshall RSVP; Hancock County Sheltered Workshop; Hancock County 4-H Foundation; Weirton Medical Center Foundation; Mary H. Weir Public Library; Salvation Army-Weirton and the Weirton Christian Center.
Bowman-Cross thanked everyone who contributed to the 2012 campaign, including all those who volunteered their time, the campaign team and everyone who donated.
In particular, she thanked Greco for his work in leading the campaign to success.
"He put a lot of his personal time in on this," she said.
The Weirton United Way already is making plans for its 2013 campaign, including the 32nd-annual Weirton United Way Golf Classic set to take place June 10 at Williams Country Club.
