Festival of Nations good for community

March 17, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

To the Editor,

Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index poll, 2012 ranked Hawaii as number one while West Virginia ranked last, for the fourth year in a row. As a community we cannot solve all the problems but we can focus on positive activities, which make us think positive and add to the happiness index.

One such activity in Weirton used to be Festival of Nations, which was celebrated with great pomp and show from 1934 through 1944. Hundreds of people participated in its production and thousands would enjoy the Festivals. The town of Weirton later merged with Hollidays Cove, Weirton Heights and Marland Heights and was incorporated as City of Weirton in 1947.The Festival was not celebrated for 65 years until the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center revived the old tradition in 2009 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the town of Weirton.

The Weirton Museum has continued the tradition and every year the Festival of Nations has spread much happiness to the participants as well as the attendees.

The fifth annual festival will be celebrated on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at the Weirton Event Center, Cove Road, Weirton, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Festival will comprise of four sections: Continuous ethnic performances on the stage; various ethnic foods for sale; display tables set up by various nationalities and groups; Weirton history books and photo calendars.

This year we are particularly happy that the following nationalities and groups will perform on the stage: African-Americans, China, Greece, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Philippines, Scotland, Ukraine, USA, Tri-State Young Marine Color Guard and the Heritage Dance Association (including Civil War era dances).

Various ethnic food vendors are: American food, The Pizzelle Man, Indian, Polish, Philippines, Serbian, African-American, Russian and Greek and Gus's Goodies.

Display tables will be set up by: American jewelery, Boys Scouts of America, Daughters of the American Revolution, Frontier Persons, a local magician, Native Americans, Greece, India, Italy, Philippines, Poland, Rotary International, and the State of West Virginia.

The year 2013 marks the 150th Anniversary of the State of West Virginia.

The admission is free.

With so much planned in our own Weirton, let us all come out to enjoy the 'Melting Pot' in action, various colorful performances and songs, different ethnic foods and learn about other cultures, which co-exist in our valley.

Please tell your friends and family members about this source of happiness so that West Virginia does not rank last in the 2013 Happiness survey. "People are just as happy as they make up their minds to be" said Abraham Lincoln. Let us follow his advice and make it a point to come on April 13 to enjoy the Festival of Nations organized by the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center.
