Donor Day recognized by local communities

March 23, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

Nine local towns and villages will honor Organ Donor Awareness Day by holding donor registration days.

Chester will hold their donor registration drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the city building, and Newell will hold a drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Newell Fire Department. Salineville, Ohio, will hold its drive from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Salineville Volunteer Fire Department; Wellsville, Ohio, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Sellabration Hall; East Liverpool, Ohio, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the city hall; Salem, Ohio, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Giant Eagle; and East Palestine, Ohio, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the East Palestine Fire Hall. Calcutta, Ohio, and St. Clair Township, Ohio, also will hold events at a date to be announced.

The event is in honor and memory of Chelsea Lingenfelter, who waited for a liver transplant for more than a year and died Feb. 18.

Volunteers from LifeBanc, C.O.R.E. and Team Chelsea will answer questions and help people register. Other groups have joined in and are holding events in conjunction with the registration drives, such as East Liverpool's health fair, Chester's Lions Club holding children's activities and Wellsville incorporating a community celebration with a band, food and an Easter egg hunt. All areas will have free coffee and doughnuts, and gifts for those who register.

Today it's likely that 18 people will die awaiting an organ transplant, and a new person is added to the transplant waiting list about every 10 minutes, according to national statistics. More than 117,000 people are on the waiting list.
