Our area has a strong tradition of residents serving in the military. It also has a strong tradition of honoring and remembering those who have given of themselves to serve their country.
There are numerous veterans memorials in the region and just about every community has some type of ceremony for Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
This year, the class of Leadership Weirton is working to help make some improvements to one of those local memorials, and we encourage our residents and business community to show their support.
The class, made up of local business representatives, is working to raise money to renovate the veterans memorial on Three Springs Drive in Weirton. The site, traditionally known as the Weirton Steel Veterans Memorial, lists the names of many Weirton area residents who have served since World War I.
The hope of Leadership Weirton is to be able to raise enough money to purchase seven new flags, perform some landscaping and install at least four new benches for the site.
A dedication ceremony then will be held shortly before Memorial Day to unveil the improvements.
In order to complete the Leadership Weirton program - offered each year by the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce - participants must implement a community service project. This is, without a doubt, the most ambitious service project put together for this purpose, and we applaud the 13 class members for taking on such an endeavor.
This project, however, will not be successful without the support of our community. Every contribution and donation will make a difference.
Memorials such as this are an important part of every community, providing an opportunity to learn and remember for us and future generations.
We ask that everyone consider making some contribution toward these efforts and help to make this memorial site even better.
