STEUBENVILLE - The best weather in recent memory begat some good times at the annual Early Bird Invitational Saturday at the Harding Stadium Track and Field Complex.

Oak Glen, making its first appearance in the meet in about five years, finished second in the girls and boys team competition.

"Today was an awesome day for everyone," said Golden Bears senior Alex Burch of her teammates.

The girls scored 131 points to finish second to Wheeling Park's 136. The boys totaled 92 to place behind talented Glenville's 125.

Indian Creek senior Frank Kamarec came in with a goal that he accomplished.

"I wanted to break the school record for most points and I'm pretty sure I got it," he remarked.

He was right.

Kamarec won the 1600 (4:59.25), finished second in the 800 (2:06.57), third in the 3200 (11:26.00) and fifth in the high jump (5-6) to total 26 points.

"It was a good day," he said with a smile.

Kamarec ran the 3200 about 10 minutes after trying to run down Glenville's Adam Lett (2:06.43) in the 800.

"That was tough," he said. "I kind of went soft on the first mile. I felt really good in the 800. I thought I was going to win. I felt really good in the 1600.

"This is a perfect day. No snow. No rain."

Oak Glen's Kelsey Chambers won the high point award for the girls. She won the 1600 (5:44.84), 3200 (12:18.80) and was a member of the winning 4x800 relay team (10:59.90).

Burch won the 100 (12.90), placed second in the 400 (1:03.77) to teammate Megan Collins (1:03.13) and anchored the 4x200 (1:51.93) and 4x400 (4:23.02) relay teams to second-place finishes.

"Today the weather was a lot better than our first meet (last Tuesday). It was freezing," said Burch. "We've been working really hard as a team, both the guys and girls, and I think it really showed today as a team. The times we had today were great. I'm happy and excited for all of us.

"It was a really good day."

Brooke's Amber Govey ran down Edison's Katelyn Pollock down the stretch to win the 800 in 2:42.57. Pollock, who won the high jump at 5-foot, was timed in 2:42.59. Govey earlier took second to Chambers in the 1600 in 5:57.90.

Edison's Ashley Borsch was clocked in 51.03 to win the 300 hurdles.

Teammate Maryanne Reed won the shot put at 30-6.

Steubenville's Elise Watts grabbed the long jump at 14-6.

Indian Creek's Kristen Shimko won the discus at 93-7.

Ten of the 16 boys events were won by Cleveland Glenville.

Oak Glen and Steubenville each won two events.

The Golden Bears' wins were from Josh Weltner in the high jump (5-8) and Zack Staley in the discus (130-0).

Steubenville's win were from Robert Hayden in the 100 (11.21) and Dashon Redman in the shot put (43-1).

For Kamarec, the goal is simple.

"I want to go to states in the 800," he said. "Anything less than that would be a disappointment."
