State police investigates allegations against deputy

April 3, 2013
From staff reports , Weirton Daily Times

NEW CUMBERLAND - Allegations of misconduct against a Hancock County sheriff's deputy are the aftermath of a "messy divorce," Hancock County Sheriff Ralph Fletcher said.

Despite what Fletcher characterized as a civil matter, he referred the case to the West Virginia State Police for further review. That investigation is continuing.

Fletcher would not identify the deputy, nor elaborate on the nature of the allegations. He said the deputy remains on active duty.

"I've done the prudent thing - I've asked another agency to look at it. They've found nothing at this time," he said.

Fletcher said the source of the allegations is the deputy's ex-wife. The deputy has legal custody of their child, he said.

Both the ex-wife and the child have been interviewed, Fletcher said.

State police officials could not be reached for comment.
