WEIRTON - The city's annual spring clean-up is set, with activities beginning Friday and continuing through next week.

The metal items collection will take place Friday, with public works crews collecting all metal items placed on the curb throughout the entire city.

The collection will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and items must have their items on the curb by 7 a.m. in order for them to be collected.

Metal items include stoves, refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines and dryers, hot water tanks, old railings, bicycle frames and metal shelving.

The remainder of the city's cleanup activities will be held Monday through April 12.

The collection of household goods items will take place on residents' regular garbage collection day. Items must be on the curb by 7 a.m.

City officials explain if a collection truck has to return to an area, a fee will be assessed.

As part of the household goods collection, the city will not collect items such as construction materials, vehicle tires or parts, tree trimmings or brush, propane tanks, air conditioners, paint, lawnmowers, oil or antifreeze and hazardous materials.

In addition, electronic items must be separated. The city will provide a separate truck to collect electronic items.

The city also will be enforcing an ordinance prohibiting scavenging of garbage or other items placed on the curb for collection. Those cited could face fines of between $5 and $500, plus costs for the first offense. Multiple offenses could include imprisonment for up to 30 days in addition to any fine.
