WEIRTON - The Weirton Elks Lodge 1801 held its installation of new officers April 2, with James "Jimbo" Miller succeeding Matt Duffy as the Exalted Ruler.
Miller will serve during the 2013-2014 lodge year. Wellsburg Elks Lodge 1553 conducted the installation service.
New officers also included Leading Knight Debbie Verelst, Loyal Knight Pete Karavanic, Secretary William Verelst, Treasurer Frank Fazio and Tiler Pat Finnegan. Ronald Jones was recognized as the lecturing knight.
Lodge trustees include Chair Roger "Hambone" Kirkpatrick, Chris Pearson, Michael Kraina, Vince Gurrera and Thomas "Goat" Barton. Appointed officers include Chaplain Stephanie Gurrera, Esquire Paul Duffy and Inner Guard Don Hickey.
The House Committee will include Chair Dick Pannett, Chris Pearson, Jack Bennett, Becky McCaig, George Paul, William Dellapenna, Stacy Flowers and Robert Kolanko.
Pearson will be the public relations chair for both the lodge and the West Virginia Elks Association. Bennett is editor of both the lodge's and West Virginia Elks Association's newsletters. Trina Humberson is the lodge's club manager.
Wellsburg lodge officers conducted the ceremony, including Exalted Ruler Jeff Cionni, Secretary Lester Verner, Leading Knight Bettylou Palmer, Trustee Bruce Cionni, Secretary Norma Wilson, Treasurer Ethel Verner, Chaplain Joseph Caseman and Esquire Robert Sult.
Miller pledged the lodge's support in Kirkpatrick's candidacy for West Virginia Elks Association Northern Vice President at the state convention April 25-28 at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling.
The House Committee is planning future projects. the first activity is a soup cook-off from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. Any member and guest can enter a soup. the cost to sample the soups is $3. The committee also is planning four golf scrambles, a Father's Day steak fry, cornhole tournament, pig roast, an oldies/doo-wop night and a car day-trip to several area lodges.
The lodge continues to hold its weekly wing night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, monthly pasta dinner from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. the third Sunday of each month and winter dart games on Wednesdays.
The Weirton Elks, founded in 1950, have supported youth activities programs, scholarships, essay contests, a youth banquet, Hoop Shoot, Soccer Shoot, drug awareness and veterans memorial services. The group also supports the annual Millsop Community Center Easter egg hunt, the Anderson Children's Home Christmas party, the Community Bread Basket and summer camp for mentally challenged and physically handicapped children.
